Apa yang diserapnya dari bacaan pada masa kanak-kanak, membuat putri Mohammad Rasyad bergelar Maharaja Sutan ini – bersaudara beda ibu dari tokoh terkenal Sutan Sjahrir – mantan Perdana Menteri Indonesia pertama  (Rohana anak tertua dari ibunya, Sjahrir anak ke delapan dari ibu yang lain) kian mantap berbuat lewat media massa.  Berikut ini kilas balik Rohana Kudus.

Karena sikap tegasnya, termasuk berani menentang atasan demi memperjuangkan nasib rakyat kecil, sang ayah dipindahkan ke Simpang Tonang, Talu, Sumatra Utara. Akan halnya Rohana, disini justru kecintaan Rohana pada dunia tulis-menulis mengental. Apalagi sang ayah menghadiahi Rohana berlangganan koran Berita Kecil, bacaan anak-anak.

Jiwa leadership tumbuh mengiringi meluasnya wawasan Rohana. Dalam usia belia ia berinisiatif mengumpulkan anak-anak sekitar rumahnya dan mengajari teman-temannya baca-tulis, membaca al Quran, bahkan ilmu rumahtangga seperti masak-memasak dan jahit menjahit. Tak heran nama Rohana, kian dikenal masyarakat Talu.

Pada usia 24 tahun (1908), Rohana menikah dengan Abdul Kudus, aktivis pergerakan yang berjiwa kemasyarakatan. Nama dari sang suami terus melekat dalam namanya. Abdul Kudus, anggota partai Insulinde juga jurnalis surat kabar Tjaja Soematera di Padang. Abdul Kudus bukan orang lain, kemenakan dari garis ayah Rohana. Setelah menikah, pasangan Rohana-Abdul Kudus kembali ke Kota Gadang. Ia membuka sekolah bebas biaya di rumahnya. Aktivitas itu diformalkan, 11 Februari 1911, resmi dinaungi Kerajinan Amal Setia (KAS) yang dipimpinnya sekaligus sebagai pengajar. Kian lama, murid Rohana kian banyak sehingga tempat belajar mereka. Para siswa tidak lagi bisa muat di rumahnya. Rohana pun meminjam Studiefond (Dana Studi) Kota Gadang, dan anak didiknya belajar dari pukul 14.00 sampai 17.00.

Cita-cita besar Rohana mengedukasi masyarakat, terganjal isu miring yang mencederai nama baiknya. Ia dituduh menggelapkan uang perkumpulan KAS. Seantero Kota Gadang tahu, bahkan kasusnya sampai masuk pengadilan. Lewat penyelidikan saksama, akhirnya Rohana dinyatakan tidak bersalah. Koran ini juga diterbitkan Maharaja bersamaan dengan Utusan Melayu. Sunting Melayu menggunakan Bahasa Melayu, dengan tagline “Surat Kabar untuk Kaum Wanita Minangkabau”. Inilah surat kabar untuk perempuan pertama di Indonesia, terbit pertama kali 10 Juli 1912, sekali seminggu sebagai percobaan. Utusan Melayu sendiri terbit tiga kali seminggu. Sejak itu Rohana “bermetamorfosa” dari pendidik melalui sekolah, menjadi jurnalis. Posisi itu membuatnya mudah kemana-mana. Nama Rohana kian masyhur. Dia bisa bergabung di Perempuan Bergerak tahun 1920, surat kabar terbitan Medan, bahkan mendapat mandat sebagai pemimpin media ini. Saat kembali ke Minangkabau, diangkat menjadi redaktris surat kabar yang didirikan warga China-Melayu di Padang. Buah pena Rohana juga menembus media-media di Jawa seperti Guntur Bergerak, Mojopahit, Sinar Hindia, Fadjar Asia, dan lainnya. Isu yang diulas pun terus berkembang, dari soal perempuan ke persoalan politik. Rohana memotivasi perempuan, misalnya dengan memuat kemajuan kaum perempuan mancanegara. Rohana juga mengkritisi penistaan kaumnya, yang diperbudak secara tak resmi menjadi gundik orang-orang Belanda dan diperlakukan semena-mena. Termasuk menggugat perlakuan buruk para pekerja di perkebunan Deli yang dijadikan budak nasfu mandor Belanda dan laki-laki bangsanya sendiri.

Menjadi jurnalis, wasilah Rohana Kudus, nama tokoh yang demikian menjadi buah bibir di tengah publik, sehingga bisa mengedukasi perempuan Bumi putra. Dengan label jurnalis pula, relasi Rohana kian luas. Bahkan dengan pembesar Belanda ia tidak segan ia bisa memposisikan diri, para pembesar itu diperlakukannya sebagai rekan. Rohana bisa saling berkorespondensi, bertukar pikiran tentang berbagai hal.

Dari proses dialogis yang amat intelek itulah, sebagian pejabat berteman dekat. Bahkan ada yang mau menjadi guru di sekolah Rohana. Misalnya, De Wall van Ancheveen. Di balik relationship yang ia bangun, bagi  Rohana terselip niatnya  mempromosikan karya terbaik putri-putri bangsanya. Rohana berhasil mendapat akses sehingga bisa menunjukkan kerajinan putri-putri bangsa dalam event International Tentoonstelling di Brussel, Belgia tahun 1913. Tanpa kecerdikan niscaya tidak mudah meraih peluang seperti ini.
