Agus Salim dan Pikiran Merdeka

Memakai kekuatan berpikir, meluaskan kemungkinan. Dengan itu, setiap orang jadi bisa memutasikan pikirannya dan tidak mentok pada hal yang sama. Relevan mengeksplorasi “bejana pemikiran” wabilkhusus tentang aktivitas ekspresi berpikir saat berpikir saja tidak merdeka. Dalam era demokrasi, kebebasan berpikir menjadi tolok ukur demokrasi, terlebih pada masa sekarang indeks demokrasi telah menghunjam negeri ini. Menurut laporan The Economist Intelligence Unit 2021 (bertajuk Democracy Indext 2020: in Sicness and Health?), Indonesia pada kategori demokrasi yang belum sempurna (merdeka.com, 6 Februari 2021). Dari 5 indikator penilaian, Indonesia mendapat nilai 7.92 untuk proses pemilu dan pluralisme, 7.14 fungsi pemerintah, 6.11 partisipasi politik, 5.63 budaya politik demokrasi, dan 5.59 kebebasan sipil. Zaman terus berputar, kian tajam dan mendalam kriteria pengukuran kedemokratisan sebuah negeri. Menjadi kontekstual, menyandingkan prinsip seorang yang pernah menjadi hoofd redacteur/pemimpin redaksi di Hindia Baru, medianya orang-orang Belanda yang berpikiran maju.

Sebagai tokoh masyhur, ia dikenal sebagai penulis dan jurnalis piawai. Juga ketokohannya tak diragukan, sebagai sekoh partai besar: Sarekat Islam. Saat dilamar untuk memimpin koran, pria bersahaja ini mengajukan syarat: ia mendapatkan kebebasan. Bebas mengatur caradan bentuk pemberitaan, membuat tajuk rencana, dan mengisi rubrik “Mimbar Jum’at” (yang terakhir, koran ini pelopornya.. Sebelum ini taka da di media cetak di Hindia Belanda).

Owners media setuju sayarat yang diminta. Koron ini hadir merebut simpati juga mengundang kontroversi pembaca. Maklum, pemimpin redaksinya tidak mengurus koran itu seperti koran partai. Harian inipun makin maju meski mulai tidak sehaluan dengan pemiliknya. “Tuan Salim. Tolong kurangi, atau perlunak kritik saudara,” demikian kata sang komisaris utama perusahaan koran ini. Diingatkan begitu, Agus Salim, jurnalis ini malah keluar. Langsung? Ya. Ia tidak lebih dulu mencari-cari peluang lain sebelum memutuskan berhenti bekerja. Kawan-kawannya juga kaget. Mohammad Roem bertanya,” Pendapatan mendadak berhenti darimana uang untuk membayar kontrakan?” Saat itu Agus Salim orang kedua Sarekat Islam setelah Oemar Said Tjokroaminoto, memang masih mengontrak.

“Hal itu sudah saya pikirkan sebelumnya. Selama saya menjadi pemimpin dan pengisi Hindia Baru, sahya tidak berbuat seperti pemimpin Sarekat Islam, dan kalau saya menulis tajuk rencana saya tidak berpikir seperti dalam rapat partai. Saya melihat di hadapan saya Indonesia pada umumnya…Saya berusaha benar-benar agar Hindia Baru menjadi harian umum. Dalam hal ini saya mendapat kritikan dari kawan-kawan sendiri. Dan banyak kawan-kawan partai mengirim karangan yang tidak saya muat, karena kurang bermutu, atau hanya bermutu bagi partai. Tetapi mengenai keyakinan saya tentang pemerintah Hindia Belanda serta kebijakaksanaannya, saya tidak bersedia tawar-menawar…Apakah memerlukan waktu untuk pindah rumah, lebih tepat ditanyakan kepada pemilik rumah…Kalau saya terus menulis, hanya dua kemungkinan: saya tidak mempedulikan permintaan pemilik harian, atau saya menyerah dan berkompromi dengan hati nurani saya.”

Dan Agus Salim bersma istri dan enam anaknya gonta-ganti rumah kontrakan karena ekonominya tidak pernah membaik. Ia alami apa yang pernah ia katakana:”Een leidersweg in een lijdenweg. Leiden is lijden.” Jalan pemimpin bukan jalan yang mudah. Memimpin adalah jalan yang menderita..

Tak heran kalau seorang diplomat Belanda, Schermerhon – lawan Sjahrir pada perundingan Linggarjati (14 Oktober 1946) menulis dalam catatan hariannya,” Dalam hubungan ini khusus saya ingat kepada Salim, …Orang tua yang sangat pandai ini sangat jenius dalam bidang Bahasa, mampu bicara dan menulis dengan sempurna dalam paling sedikit Sembilan Bahasa, mempunyai satu kelamahan: selama hidupnya melarat.”

Agus Salim mungkin memang tak pernah hidup mewah. Kemewahan hakikinya, kebebasannya berpikir, sesuatu yang memodali banyak pemuda Indonesia menjadi nasionalis dan muslim yang punya prinsip. Ia menginspirasi pemuda Indonesia, menjadi pemimpin hebat. Malulah kita kalau banyak orang mengagungkan pemimpin karena kekuatan duitnya; bukan karena prinsipnya. Pilu hati kita pada media yang memberi ruang terhormat kepada pemimpin dan pemburu jabatan pemimpin padahal tak punya prinsip. Membuka sedikit sejarah Agus Salim, kita hijrahkan dukungan hanya pada mereka yang memegang teguh prinsipnya. Meskipun mereka bukan golongan berduit.
